Bib #1451

Miles (bib #1451) ran a 5k this morning in 29 minutes 9 seconds. The photo is at about the halfway mark.

This 5k is in memory of a 10-year-old boy who died of leukemia. The race started and ended at the elementary school he attended. The course was through the neighborhood where he played and rode his bike.

I saw two old men sitting in lawn chairs on the corner, drinking coffee and cheering on the kids. I saw families who came out the front door about the time the race started for a party in the front yard, much like you might see for a July 4th parade. After 23 years, this 5k has become a neighborhood block party. I’m glad to have witnessed this kind of environment in which kids thrive.
