I was on the Advisory Committee for the Sing to the Lord hymnal. The publisher asked me to prepare two companion books for the hymnal.

Resources for Worship Planning (Lillenas, 1993, 978-0834194045) was designed to help the worship planner make full use of the hymnal. The book is organized in four parts. Part One provides an overview of all indices and resources available in this book and the hymnal, then demonstrates how to use each resource in worship planning. Part Two is a concordance of hymns. It works just like a Bible concordance. Over 700 words used in hymns were concorded. Part Three provides an index of Bible quotes and allusions used in the hymns. Part Four has common tone modulation tables for use in putting together song sequences for worship. In each table, the last note of the songs in the left column is the first not of the songs in the right column, even though the songs are in different keys. The modulation between keys pivots on the common tone.

The Birth of a Hymn: Spiritual Biographies of 20 Hymn Writers and the Experiences that Inspired Them (Lillenas, 1997, 978-0834196452) is based on my belief that a spiritual encounter with God naturally seeks expression. For some people, that expression is a song. The publisher initially asked for a book of hymn stories. That’s included in this book, but before the hymn stories come the spiritual biographies. To provide focus for the book, I wrote on 20 hymn writers who were part of congregations in the Wesleyan-Holiness Movement.

At the request of Susie Stanley, I wrote Satisfied: Women Hymn Writers of the 19th Century Wesleyan/Holiness Movement for the benefit of the Wesleyan/Holiness Women Clergy.
